Vol. 471 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cork Housing Funding.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

154 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Environment whether he will provide additional funding in the south Cork area in view of the fact that there are 456 applicants currently awaiting housing in the area. [20304/96]

The capital available for the local authority housing construction programme in 1996 has been fully allocated and there are no funds available to supplement the allocation to individual authorities. Capital allocations for 1997 will be made in due course, when the Public Capital Programme for the year has been determined, taking account of the needs in different areas.

In recent years, the traditional means of meeting social housing needs through the provision of local authority housing has been supplemented by a comprehensive range of other social housing measures. It is for housing authorities to develop the full potential of the various measures open to them to respond to housing needs in their areas.
