Vol. 471 No. 2

Written Answers. - Treatment for Hepatitis Patients.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

104 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health if he will provide a list of drugs used in the treatment of those infected with hepatitis B and hepatitis C. [20643/96]

Limerick East): The management of persons suffering from acute hepatitis B or hepatitis C is directed towards the relief of a variety of symptoms which may occur, and very many widely-used medications are available to the clinician for this purpose depending on the symptoms concerned. Those patients whose illness progresses to chronic hepatitis may, depending on individual circumstances, be treated with antiviral drugs such as Interferon. The decision on which drugs to prescribe is a matter for the attending clinician, in association with the patient, and is confidential to them. I cannot therefore provide a categoric list of all drugs which may be used in the treatment of such patients.
