Vol. 471 No. 4

Written Answers - Replacement of Traffic Lights.

Máirín Quill

Question:

156 Miss Quill asked the Minister for the Environment whether he has received a submission from Cork Corporation in respect of the funding of the replacement of existing traffic lights in the city; his views on whether the current traffic lights have outlived their usefulness; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21166/96]

Cork Corporation recently submitted a proposal to my Department under the EU co-financed scheme of grants for specific improvement projects on non-national roads, for funding the replacement of the urban traffic control system in the city. However, the proposed works do not fall within the categories of works eligible for funding under this scheme. My Department has previously informed the corporation that there is no objection to the use of the corporation's annual discretionary grant, which amounts to £1 million in 1996, for this purpose.
