Vol. 471 No. 5

Written Answers. - Irish Neutrality.

Ray Burke

Question:

78 Mr. R. Burke asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs whether the Government is in agreement with the statements of Chancellor Kohl regarding Irish neutrality. [21274/96]

I have seen media reports of replies given by Chancellor Kohl to questions from the press during his recent visit here. These touched on neutrality among other issues. It is my understanding that the thrust of the Chancellor's comments is that military neutrality is not now a contentious issue and that the priority is to deal with the realities that face the EU today. These are remarks with which the Government has no difficulty.
