Vol. 471 No. 6

Written Answers. - Caretaker's Allowance.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

119 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Education if she will contact the board of management of a northside Dublin primary school (details supplied) in Dublin 5 and accept its proposals regarding the use of its caretaker's allowance when its caretaker was ill and absent for a long period in view of the ongoing debts of this school. [21488/96]

The position is that the caretaker in question is employed under my Department's 1979 scheme for the employment of caretakers in national schools. Under the provision of this scheme my Department meets the full cost of salary and employer's PRSI while the post holder is serving or remains within the 91 days paid sick-leave limit.

I regret to inform the Deputy that there is no provision for the temporary replacement of caretakers who are either on paid or unpaid sick-leave.
