Vol. 471 No. 7

Written Answers. - Psychological Service.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Question:

233 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for Education the current position regarding the development by her Department of a school psychological service at primary school level; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21505/96]

The White Paper on Education, Charting our Education Future, outlines a policy for the expansion of the schools psychological service at both first and second level. The provision of the psychological service is seen as a function of the proposed education boards. This provision will be developed on a phased basis as resources allow.

A psychological service to the primary sector began in 1990. Four psychologists were appointed to work in a pilot psychological service in primary schools in west Tallaght-Clondalkin and south Tipperary.

A further ten psychologists were appointed in 1995 to continue the development of the Department of Education's psychological service for primary schools. These have been assigned, as a matter of priority, to schools serving disadvantaged areas. These are in Dublin, Cork city and Limerick city.

Further expansion of this service will take place on a phased basis as resources become available.
