Vol. 472 No. 1

Written Answers. - Overcrowding in Schools.

Ray Burke

Question:

212 Mr. R. Burke asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the overcrowding in Portrane national school with one class of 38; if her attention has further been drawn to the fact that Portrane-Donabate parish is an expanding area; and the plans, if any, she has to provide sufficient school places for the increasing population. [22628/96]

I take it the Deputy's question relates to St. Patrick's boys' national school. Due to enrolments at this school in September 1996, and the current staffing schedule, an extra assistant will be assigned to the school next year.

I am aware of the increased housing development in the Portrane-Donabate area. The planning section of my Department is currently carrying out a review of the school needs of the area to take account of these developments and a report in the matter has been requested. When this report has been received, my Department will be in touch with the school management.
