Vol. 472 No. 1

Other Questions. - US Tour Operators.

Liam Aylward

Question:

42 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the number of new tour operators from the United States and EU markets which commenced operations in each of the years 1995 and 1996; and whether these operators will remain in the Irish market. [21974/96]

Mr. O'Sullivan

The Minister for Tourism and Trade has no responsibility in relation to tour operators. The statistics requested by the Deputy might be sought from Bord Fáilte whose responsibilities include the marketing and promotion of Ireland in overseas markets in conjunction with, amongst others, tour operators.

Will the Minister agree it is most unsatisfactory that such statistical information, which is fairly straightforward, is not available in the House where it would be most readily accessible by the public and people involved? Will he also agree that his Department ought to play a more central role in ensuring that conditions are suitable for tour operators to come here, and keep tabs on the activities of Bord Fáilte to ensure that action is taken to encourage even more tour operators who effectively decide how many tourists come from overseas markets?

Mr. O'Sullivan

I have no doubt that if the Minister interfered with the operation of Bord Fáilte Deputy Killeen would be the first to criticise him. He is not being realistic. The information is available by picking up the phone and ringing Bord Fáilte.

I thank the Minister for his help. I will try what he suggests, but if I am not successful or if I have further questions, perhaps the Minister will answer them in the Chamber.
