Vol. 472 No. 3

Written Answers. - Prisoner Transfers.

Mary O'Rourke

Question:

210 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Justice if she will review the case of a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath who, following a court sentence, was sent to Mountjoy Prison, but was transferred within three days to Cork; if she will arrange, due to health and social reasons, to have him transferred back to Dublin where his family will be able to visit him; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22994/96]

The person concerned was committed to Mountjoy Prison on 19 November 1996. On the following day he was offered, but declined, a transfer to Loughan House, an open centre in County Cavan, where he would have benefited from half remission. He was subsequently transferred to Cork Prison for operational reasons. His case will, of course, continue to be kept under review.

The management of an individual prisoner's sentence frequently necessitates transfers between the various prisons and places of detention. I can, however, assure the Deputy that all relevant matters, including the health and personal circumstances of individual prisoners, are taken fully into accountant in each case.
