Vol. 472 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Placement.

Tony Gregory

Question:

148 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education the assistance, if any, her Department can give to provide a place in a special school or any school which can educate a child (details supplied) in Dublin 7 who was expelled three weeks ago for being disruptive in class. [23928/96]

I am aware of the case referred to by the Deputy.

The selection and enrolment of pupils is the responsibility of individual school authorities. In cases such as this, my Department endeavours to establish the special needs, if any, of the pupil concerned and by a process of consultation with school management to have the pupil concerned placed in a school in his locality.

My Department has written to the parent and when a reply is received appropriate further action will be taken.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

149 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education if he will investigate the case of a person (details supplied) in County Cork who is hyperactive and who is not able to avail of his right to education; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a school in County Tipperary was prepared to accept this child but then refused; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that the Southern Health Board has been involved in this case; and if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that this child is only 11 years-old and is becoming very depressed. [23937/96]

I can assure the Deputy that I am anxious to ensure that the child in question is placed in a suitable educational facility as soon as possible. My Department's inspectorate is urgently investigating a suitable placement in close consultation with the Southern Health Board.

I would be hopeful that this matter can be successfully resolved in the near future.
