Vol. 472 No. 6

Written Answers. - BSE Compensation.

Hugh Byrne

Question:

209 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry whether he has paid BSE compensation to a farmer who fed meat and bonemeal to his herd further to a media report (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23878/96]

Hugh Byrne

Question:

210 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the amount of compensation paid in view of a media report (details supplied); the criteria used to calculate the lesser payment given in this instance due to the fact that meat and bonemeal had been fed to the herd; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23879/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos.209 and 210 together.

A sum of £81,000 was paid in compensation to a herdowner for the depopulation of his herd following the occurrence of a case of BSE where evidence existed of the administration of feed containing meat and bonemeal. The sum paid reflected a deduction of £9,000 on the market value of the herd made pursuant to the Diseases of Animals (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) (Amendment) Order, 1992 due to the failure of the herdowner to take reasonable precautions to protect against the disease.

Question:

211 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will list by county all cases of BSE and the amounts of BSE compensation paid to farmers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23880/96]

The information requested for 1996 is set out in the following table. Prior to March 1996 farmers also received salvage value for the animals which was paid by the relevant meat factory.
