Vol. 472 No. 6

Written Answers. - Antimony Trioxide Hazards.

Mary Harney

Question:

51 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Health if he will have investigations made into any other health hazards associated with antimony trioxide in view of the fact that the Irish Sudden Infant Death Association is conducting a research study into the alleged link between antimony levels in cot mattresses and cot deaths. [23672/96]

Limerick East): The research being carried out by the Irish Sudden Infant Death Association is being funded by the Department of Health and arose from concerns about an alleged link between antimony levels in cot mattresses and cot deaths. Apart from this research, I have no plans at present to have investigations made into antimony trioxide. It has already been investigated by the World Health Organisation who concluded on the basis of its research that there is inadequate evidence for its carcinogenicity in humans.
