Vol. 472 No. 7

Written Answers. - Sanctions Against Nigeria.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

33 Mr. Sargent asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he is in favour of extending the sanctions against Nigeria adopted by the Council which expired on 4 December 1996, on the first anniversary of the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and the other eight environmental activists from Ogoniland, in view of the indifferent attitude of the Nigerian Government to appeals for reform. [24007/96]

I refer to the reply which I have given earlier today to a priority question on this matter which confirms that the measures referred to by the Deputy have already been extended for a further six months with effect from 4 December and with the full support of Ireland.
