Vol. 472 No. 7

Written Answers. - Human Rights Abuses.

Mary Coughlan

Question:

46 Miss Coughlan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the Government's and the EU's response to the appeal by Amnesty International to the EU that the EU further commit itself to the fight against human rights violations in Latin America. [23971/96]

I am very conscious of Amnesty International's concern for human rights in many countries in Latin America.

Respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms is a key issue for the EU in its institutionalised political dialogue and in its relations with the countries of Latin America. EU Ambassadors are tasked with monitoring the situation with regard to human rights abuses and with reporting on these matters so that the EU can respond appropriately.

Amnesty's concerns about particular countries are given serious consideration by the European Union in formulating its approach to these countries in human rights matters.
