59 Mr. Callely asked the Taoiseach this views on the use of computerisation in his Department; his views on whether his Department could operate without the assistance and back-up of computers; his views on the anticipated development of computers in the years ahead; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The use of information technology in my Department has increased both personal and organisational effectiveness and has provided better communication links with other Departments and outside bodies. The overall objective of the Department's IT plan is to ensure that the IT system contributes effectively to the achievement of the Department's objectives in the context of the Strategic Management Initiative. The report of the co-ordinating group of secretaries, Delivering Better Government, highlights the potential IT to further improve efficiency and service delivery by supporting redesigned work practices, reporting arrangements and information management. A working group on information technology has been established under the strategic Management Initiative to consider how this potential can be realised and, in particular, to review the current and potential use of information technology in the Civil Service and to make recommendations for its more effective application and review the implications and benefits of the emerging "information society" for the Civil Service and to make recommendations on the role of the Civil Service and the actions required in the light of that role. The group has commenced work on these issues and is expected to report shortly to the co-ordinating group overseeing implementing of the Strategic Management Initiative.
