Vol. 472 No. 7

Written Answers. - Security Measures.

James McDaid

Question:

64 Dr. McDaid asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make a statement on the break-ins at the Upper Springfield Road Woman's Resource Centre by the RUC on 15 and 18 November 1996; and if he will request that all equipment be returned in view of the fact that it has crippled the work of the women's group. [24026/96]

I am aware of the incidents to which the Deputy refers. We are pursuing inquiries in the matter through the framework of the Anglo-Irish Intergovernmental Conference. While accepting the need to take account of current security, the Government believes that any security measures should be applied with care, restraint and due regard for their effects on the everyday lives of local communities. We have made this clear on a number of occasions within the framework of the Anglo-Irish Intergovernmental Conference, including at the most recent meeting at ministerial level on 20 November 1996.
