Vol. 472 No. 7

Written Answers. - Urban Renewal Scheme.

John Ellis

Question:

88 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make provision in the 1997 budget for urban renewal status to be given to Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim; and if he will make a statement regarding his intentions for the designation of this status. [24025/96]

An overall review of the urban renewal schemes as they have operated to date is currently under way. As part of the review, a consultants' study on the impact of the schemes in economic, social and architectural terms has been completed. The study was published on 5 December and is now the subject of a process of public consultation under which submissions have been invited from interested persons and organisations in relation to its conclusions and recommendations. Copies of the study are available in the Oireachtas Library. It would be inappropriate to consider what new areas, if any, might be suitable for designation as part of any future scheme until general policy in relation to the next phase of urban renewal is determined in the light of the review.
