Vol. 472 No. 8

Written Answers. - Casino Licence.

Tony Killeen

Question:

16 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Finance whether he will publish the interagency task force report on all aspects of licensing a casino, including its likely impact on tourism. [21965/96]

The Government asked the Department of Finance to prepare a report, in consultation with the other Government Departments and agencies involved, on the pros and cons of licensing casino gaming either as a means of financing the proposed National Convention Centre or otherwise on it merits. To assist him in the matter, the Minister for Finance established a task force made up of the Departments and agencies concerned. The Government considered the report of the task force earlier this year and decided, in the context of a proposal received from the RDS to construct a National Conference Centre without recourse to an annual subvention, not to give further consideration at present to the introduction of legislation to provide a casino or casinos in this country. There are no plans to publish the task force report.
