Vol. 473 No. 1

Written Answers. - Use of Antibiotics.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

301 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if his attention has been drawn to the fact that antibiotics are being used in the cheese processing industry; the action, if any, he proposes to take in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24568/96]

Under S.I. No. 9 of 1996, which gives legal effect in Ireland to Council Directive 92/46/EEC on the hygienic production of milk and milk-based products, the use of milk which contains residues of substances which could be detrimental to human health is prohibited. The best technical advice available to me is that antibiotic residues in milk would render it unsuitable for cheese production.
