Vol. 473 No. 3

Written Answers. - Visiting Teacher Service.

Brendan Kenneally

Question:

127 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for Education the reason for the delay in appointing a visiting teacher for the deaf in the Waterford/Kilkenny area in view of the fact that this facility has not been available to deaf children in this area from the commencement of this school year; the urgent steps, if any, she will take to appoint a person to this position; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [24981/96]

The appointment to which the Deputy refers will be made early in the new year.

The delay in this matter arises from the fact that the filling of this vacancy is being pursued in the context of a wider reorganisation of the visiting teacher service. This reorganisation follows a decision to allocate an additional two teachers to the service in the current school year.

It has not proved possible to secure the services of a suitable temporary visiting teacher to fill the post in question pending completion of the wider reorganisation.
