Vol. 473 No. 3

Written Answers. - Social Insurance Records.

Joe Walsh

Question:

192 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will give details of the current survey of social insurance records being carried out by his Department; the number of people contacted during the survey; the number of responses received; and the proportion of such responses, if any, which indicated discrepancies in relation to social insurance records. [24974/96]

As part of the programme to improve the overall quality of social insurance records held on the Department's computer system, the Department started last year to review the records of certain categories of people where it appeared that the records were deficient or incomplete.

During this year about 10,000 persons were contacted. The purpose of the exercise was to give the people concerned the opportunity to examine their insurance records and to furnish details if they consider that there are inaccuracies or omissions. Discrepancies were reported in 146 cases and these are being investigated. The discrepancies appear to be virtually all due to failure of employers to make returns or as a result of deficient or inaccurate employer returns.
