Question:

272 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for the Marine the reason for the reduced provision for the proposed Loran C radio navigation system in the 1997 Book of Estimates. [25184/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 271 and 272 together.

In reply to a similar question from the Deputy on 26 November I explained that the overall position is that Ireland is committed, under an international agreement, to the provision of a Loran C station as part of a North West European radio navigation system. That remains the position. The Deputy will be aware of the ongoing legal issues relevant to this project. I understand, in this regard, that an application for a certificate to appeal the recent High Court decision regarding planning permission is due to be heard by the High Court today.

Full financial provision was made for the proposed Loran C system in the Estimates for this year and previous years but this was not expended as the project could not proceed because of ongoing legal proceedings. Due to continuing uncertainty as to when legal matters would be clarified, the provision for 1997 was reduced on the understanding that should these matters be clarified, and the project allowed to proceed next year, the provision in the subhead would be reconsidered with a view to providing any further funding required.
