Vol. 473 No. 3

Written Answers. - Clinical Waste.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

274 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Marine if container-loads of infected clinical waste are being transported abroad in ordinary roll-on roll-off car ferries. [25006/96]

The carriage of dangerous goods by sea, including infected clinical waste, is governed by the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG) of the International Maritime Organisation. Current requirements are implemented in Ireland by the Merchant Shipping (Dangerous Goods) Rules, 1992

The carriage of dangerous goods on ordinary roll-on roll-off car ferries operating to and from Irish ports is strictly prohibited by my Department under Part III, section 12 of these rules.
