207 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he intends to go ahead with the erection of a statue of St. Patrick on the Hill of Tara, County Meath, in view of the fact that most local residents disagree with the representation of St. Patrick as depicted by the favoured artist; and if he will reconsider the matter in consultation with local residents. A competition for the commission was held among reputable Irish artists. The five entries received were displayed at Tara and the views of the public obtained.
A recommendation has been made by the selection committee, which comprised representatives of the local community, the Arts Council, the Association of Artists in Ireland, Office of Public Works and my Department. Based on this recommendation, proposals to progress the matter will shortly be conveyed to the local community.
