Vol. 473 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Síochána Dispute.

Matt Brennan

Question:

32 Mr. M. Brennan asked the Minister for Justice the progress, if any, which has been made in resolving the dispute between the Garda Representative Association and the Garda Federation on foot of the passing of the Committee Stage of the Garda Síochána Bill, 1996; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2139/97]

My preferred option at all times was that the gardaí would themselves settle this dispute internally. The Bill is designed to address the situation where internal settlement seemed impossible.

I am glad to say that I understand that arrangements have now been made by the three groups involved in the representation dispute to meet to try to resolve their differences. I wish them well in their endeavours and will, of course, keep the matter, including the precise form of legislative reform that may be required, under review pending developments.
