Vol. 473 No. 6

Written Answers. - Charities Legislation.

Helen Keogh

Question:

38 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to amend the law concerning the fund-raising capabilities of charities. [24672/96]

The Deputy will be aware that there is a commitment in the Government Policy Agreement to reform the law relating to the administration and regulation of charities along the lines of the report of the Committee on Fundraising Activities for Charitable and Other Purposes. Work on the preparation of this legislation is proceeding and it is hoped to introduce the legislation in 1997.

To assist this process, the Minister of State, Deputy Burton, established an advisory group on charities comprising representatives of a number of organisations working in the area. This report has been finalised and has been referred by the Government to the Select Committee on Legislation and Security for the purposes of obtaining the committee's views prior to the finalisation of legislative proposals. The question of fundraising is one of the issues which will be considered as part of that process.
