Question:62 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice the number of additional prison officers appointed in 1995 and 1996; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2153/97]

The number of prison officers recruited in 1995 was 36. There was no recruitment in 1996. The number of staff of all grades serving in the prison service now is 2,482 compared with 2,497 at 1 January 1995.
