Vol. 473 No. 6

Written Answers. - Prison Service Reform.

Mary Harney

Question:

71 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Justice the security and other reforms which will be implemented in the prison service in view of the recent hostage siege in Mountjoy prison; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2183/97]

A comprehesive review of security arrangements relating to the management of violent prisoners is under way in the aftermath of the Mountjoy hostage taking incident which occurred on 4-6 January 1997. This review is being conducted by senior officials of my Department in conjunction with prison governors. Consultations are also ongoing with the Prison Officers Association.

It would be premature to comment further on the security implications of the Mountjoy incident until this review has been completed. However, I can assure the Deputy and this House that any proposals to improve security in the prison system will be fully and quickly implemented.

I am sure the House will be glad to join with me in complimenting all of those who successfully brought this very dangerous situation to a safe conclusion.
