Vol. 474 No. 1

Written Answers. - Vehicle Scrappage Scheme.

Noel Ahern

Question:

68 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance the situation in relation to the scrappage scheme where a person (details supplied) took over ownership of a car from her elderly father in March 1996 and is being refused the benefits of the scheme on a technicality; if he will reconsider the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2553/97]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that they have no record of receipt of either a completed application for repayment of VRT under the scrappage scheme or of any correspondence from the person referred to by the Deputy.

In order to qualify for repayment under the scheme, the scrapped vehicle must have been owned by the applicant for at least two years immediately prior to the scrapping of the vehicle. If, in the case referred to by the Deputy, the daughter became the registered owner of the vehicle in question in March 1996, this period falls short of the two year ownership requirement under the scheme. Consequently, it would appear that the vehicle does not qualify for repayment under the scheme.
