Vol. 474 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tourism Projects.

Tom Moffatt

Question:

42 Dr. Moffatt asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the Government's plans, if any, to ensure Ireland in general or some regions continue to benefit from Objective 1 status for tourism projects. [2527/97]

The Government is monitoring, and will continue to monitor, all aspects of Ireland's position in relation to eligibility for Structural Funds after 1999. The approach is aimed at ensuring the optimum outcome in the forthcoming negotiations for the renewal of the Structural Funds after 1999. The Minister for Finance has overall responsibility in this area.

I understand from the Minister for Finance that the negotiations on the future financing of the European Union, including the Structural Funds, will not commence until the conclusion of the Intergovernmental Conference when the European Commission will submit a communication on the future financial framework of the Union as from 31 December 1999. This is likely to be in the second half of 1997. Ireland's approach to these negotiations is under consideration and when the negotiations commence, the Government will ensure that Ireland's interests are vigorously and effectively pursued.
