Vol. 474 No. 2

Written Answers. - Music Examination.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

74 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education the consultation, if any, which has taken place with music teachers and organisations to ensure that the 1997 leaving certificate music examination is found to be of an acceptable nature in content for students. [2664/97]

The 1977 examination in music will be based on the current syllabus and the recommendations of a consultative committee which I set up to make interim changes in the examination. The committee included teachers, third level personnel and the inspectorate. Changes in the practical tests were introduced immediately in 1995 followed by the remaining changes in the aural and written papers in 1996. Sample questions were issued and the views of teachers were taken into consideration.

Marking schemes and a report on the leaving certificate music examination 1995 have been issued to schools. The marking schemes for 1996 will be available shortly. This is part of the ongoing process of making information available for the benefit of schools, teachers and students.
