Vol. 474 No. 3

Written Answers. - Job Initiative Scheme.

Kathleen Lynch

Question:

43 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment, in relation to the Jobs Initiative, the number and percentage of people in the relevant catchment areas who qualify in terms of age and other criteria; the number who are women; the number who are over 40 and over 50; the extent to which statistical information on the populations in the catchment areas has been compiled; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2903/97]

The Jobs Initiative provides 1,000 full-time jobs in the social economy for unemployed persons over 35 years whose principal or only source of income is an unemployment compensation payment or lone parent's allowance and who live in the following partnership areas: Limerick city, Cork city, Dublin inner city, Tallaght, Ballymun, Coolock, Darndale, Kilbarrack and Finglas-Cabra.

The initiative itself is a pilot programme, and each job can last up to December 1999. Participants in the Job Initiative are employed by voluntary-community bodies in line with the above eligibility criteria. At the end of January 1997 there were 711 unemployed people recruited under the programme and this figure will rise to 1,000 shortly as soon as sponsors complete their recruitment plans.

I propose to circulate the information sought by the Deputy in a table in the Official Report.
