Vol. 474 No. 4

Written Answers. - BSE Outbreaks.

Ivor Callely

Question:

145 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the current situation regarding BSE; the total number of cases to date by county; the progress, if any, which has been made with research on BSE to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3255/97]

The number of cases of BSE in each county since the first confirmed case in Ireland in 1989 is set out in the following table. As far as research into BSE is concerned, a number of research projects has already been completed while projects are under way into areas such as the development of an automated ELISA test, the effects of scrapie infection on gene expression and an in-vitro analysis of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy replication. Other research projects should be initiated shortly under the auspices of the EU non-commissioned food research programme or the fourth framework research programme.
