Vol. 474 No. 6

Written Answers. - Live Cattle Exports.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

253 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the proposals, if any, he has for extra markets for live exports of cattle; and the extra ferries required for this purpose. [3706/97]

Various missions have been undertaken at both ministerial and official level to a number of countries to either maintain or reopen third country markets for live cattle. In addition, I am working closely with other agencies — Department of Foreign Affairs and An Bord Bia — to promote the quality and safety of Irish beef by means of diplomatic representation, promotional visits, attendance at trade fairs, technical delegations and other activities which have the effect of confirming and reinforcing the excellent image of Irish cattle and beef.

The provision of ferries is primarily a matter for the ferry companies themselves. However, I was pleased to be able to announce recently that an additional ferry service for livestock to mainland Europe would be introduced in the near future.
