268 Mr. Jacob asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications when a radon grant scheme will be established in view of the publication of the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland's report on radon in dwellings in October 1996 which showed that householders in large parts of County Wicklow have a significant chance of exposure to radon and his indication in Dáil Éireann on 26 November 1996 that he had sought to have provision made in the 1997 Estimates for such a scheme. I refer the Deputy to my answer to Question No. 176 of 23 January 1997. I can make no commitment at present concerning grant assistance to householders in respect of remedial work to homes with high radon levels. The matter is being kept under review in the light of Exchequer commitments and overall budgetary constraints.
