Question:

279 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence the number of recruits and cadets assigned to the Defence Forces in 1996; the number proposed for 1997 and 1998; and the age limits for those recruited. [3514/97]

In 1996 a total of 273 persons were enlisted in the Permanent Defence Force. The breakdown of the categories enlisted and the prescribed age limits are as follows:

Not less than 17 years of age and under 21 years of age on 1 July 1996. Extensions of the upper age limit were permitted in the following circumstances:

(a) Members of An Forsa Cosanta Áitiúil/Slua Muirí

Under 23 years on 1 July 1996

(b) Holders of a third level degree

Under 24 years on 1 July 1996

(c) Serving members of the Permanent Defence Force

Under 24 years on 1 July 1996

Apprentices

At least 16 and under 19 years of age on 1 September 1996

General Service Recruits

200

Not less than 17 and not more than 22 years on 1 October 1996

The number who will be enlisted in the various categories in 1997 and 1998 is not yet finalised but the implementation plan for the reorganisation of the Defence Forces envisages recruitment of the order of 400 personnel in each of these years.
