Vol. 474 No. 6

Written Answers. - Departmental Costs.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

43 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Marine the total amount of money expended on consultancies in the past two years; the total number of reports from these consultancies; and the cost of such reports. [1497/97]

The amounts expended on consultancy and certain other professional services in 1995 and 1996 were £1,306,000 and £1,120,00 respectively. This includes certain consultancies the costs of which were met by the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Finance Board.

My Department's wide remit covers fisheries, marine transport, marine pollution and the marine environment, the operation of five fishery harbour centres and Dún Laoghaire harbour. These responsibilities require the engagement of a large number of engineering and other technical consultants. The cost of these consultancies accounts for the bulk of my Department's expenditure in this area.

Reports are prepared in respect of most consultancies undertaken on behalf of my Department, but these would generally be technical or operational in character. The major policy reviews and studies which have been initiated in my Department since 1995 and for which consultants have been engaged are set out in a table which I propose to circulate in the Official Report. This table does not include engineering or other technical consultancies.
