Vol. 474 No. 7

Written Answers. - Landing Charges.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

133 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he has requested Aer Rianta to reduce landing charges in Irish airports. [1960/97]

During his meeting with the board of Aer Rianta on 13 November 1996, my predecessor asked the company to look at its airport charges to see if they could be reduced further. While noting that charges at the State Airports compared favourably with charges elsewhere in Europe, he asked whether, in the light of growth in passengers and revenues, Aer Rianta could be even more competitive on charges.

Following a review by Aer Rianta of airport charges, I recently approved a proposal from the company for a new rolling 5 year traffic growth incentive scheme at the State airports with effect from 1 January 1997.

I will arrange for copies of the relevant press releases to be transmitted to the Deputy.
