Vol. 475 No. 4

Written Answers. - Summer Jobs Scheme.

Paul Bradford

Question:

248 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will respond to a query (details supplied) concerning the student summer jobs scheme. [4945/97]

I have responded to the inquiry referred to on 21 February 1997. The students summer jobs scheme operated successfully again last year and proved to be of significant benefit to local communities and voluntary groups. Many valuable projects have been undertaken under the scheme over the past four years which would otherwise not have been carried out. Fifteen thousand, eight hundred students participated in the scheme.

Under the students summer jobs scheme this year third level students who are debarred from qualifying for unemployment assistance during the summer will be entitled to do 200 hours work with an approved sponsor for which they will be paid £600. Students who take part in the scheme can engage in other work either during or after their participation which enables them to maximise their earnings during the summer months.

I propose to continue with the scheme this year on the same basis as last year. A total of £10.2 million has again been provided by the Government for this years scheme and this will enable the same number of students to participate as in 1996.

Details of the 1997 scheme will be announced shortly in the national papers and both sponsors and students will be invited to apply.
