Vol. 475 No. 6

Written Answers. - Prison Medical Services.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

84 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Justice whether the contractual problems in the provision of medical services to Mountjoy have been resolved; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5482/97]

A new contract for doctors in prisons has been undergoing protracted negotiations for a number of years. The delays are due to lack of agreement. Officials of my Department met the Irish Medical Organisation again recently and were informed that the organisation is in favour of the revised contract for prison medical doctors. Two new matters raised by the Irish Medical Organisation at the meeting are under consideration by the Department of Finance. I expect to have a reply from the Department of Finance shortly at which time my officials will seek an immediate meeting with the Irish Medical Organisation with a view to finalising the contract.

As indicated in my response to Deputy O'Donnell on 28 January 1997 the contract will provide a basis for improving medical services within Mountjoy prison. It will, however, be only part of the solution and discussions are currently ongoing with the Department of Finance regarding the complement of doctors at the prison.
