Vol. 475 No. 7

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Noel Treacy

Question:

140 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Education if she will sanction a project at a school (details supplied) in County Galway; the reason the project has not been sanctioned to date; the date on which this will be done; the amount of money allocated in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5653/97]

Due to the current level of contractual commitments, I am not in a position to sanction improvement works at the school referred to by the Deputy.

The reason the project has not been sanctioned to date is that I am dealing with a significant backlog of urgent projects arising out of the major cuts in the capital funding of primary schools in the 1988-92 period.

Under the new devolved grants scheme, the school will soon be paid £2,000, plus £9 per pupil, to carry out improvement works to its buildings, services and furnishing.
