Vol. 475 No. 7

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

John O'Leary

Question:

163 Mr. O'Leary asked the Minister for Education the reason extension and improvement works were not carried out on Aughacasla national school near Castlegregory, County Kerry, as promised in 1996; when work will commence on this project in view of the fact that these premises, where six teachers and 120 pupils work, are infested with vermin and are a serious health hazard. [5863/97]

I am fully aware of the accommodation difficulties being experienced at Aughacasla national school, County Kerry.

The architectural planning for the proposed building project at the school is complete and the documentation required to invite tenders has also been prepared.

Due to budgetary constraints, it was not possible to include all deserving building schemes in my Department's first round of projects which were allowed to proceed to tender stage recently.

I will be keeping expenditure on the primary school building programme under review and Aughacasla will receive every consideration at the appropriate time.
