Vol. 475 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Cavan Jobs.

Brendan Smith

Question:

244 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if his attention has been drawn to the widespread concern in relation to possible job losses at a company (details supplied) in County Cavan; the efforts, if any, he has made to have the existing level of employment retained at this company; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5944/97]

The investment strategy at the company involved is a commercial decision for its proprietors. The company has decided to develop a new manufacturing facility on a separate site which will concentrate on value added products, which is the area with greatest potential market growth.

This development strategy does not entail any diminution in the level of employment in the company and is designed to strengthen its ability to compete in a rapidly changing poultry meat market.
