Vol. 475 No. 7

Written Answers. - Safety Equipment.

Michael Bell

Question:

263 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence the number of ear defenders issued to each PDF and FCA unit; the steps, if any, he proposes to take in relation to hygiene to ensure protection against ear infection in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5920/97]

Ear defenders, which range from ear plugs to ear muffs, are issued to all members of both the Permanent Defence Force and An Fórsa Cosanta Aitiúil. Ear plugs and ear muffs are issued on a personal issue basis to all members of the Permanent Defence Force.

With regard to the FCA, ear plugs are also issued on a personal issue basis while ear muffs are held by unit commanders for issue to the members as required.

As ear plugs are issued on a personal issue basis to all personnel the question of hygiene in their use is a matter for each individual. Where ear muffs are shared, hygiene pads are provided for wearing with the muffs.
