Question:

31 Mr. B. Smith asked the Taoiseach the national average retail prices for leaded petrol, unleaded petrol and auto diesel for mid-January 1997 and mid-February 1997. [5711/97]

National average retail prices for leaded petrol, unleaded petrol and auto diesel are available from the compilation of the consumer index (CPI).

The CPI was compiled on a quarterly basis in respect of the middle Tuesday of the months February, May, August and November each year up to the end of 1996. Starting with January 1997, the CPI is being compiled on a monthly basis.

The national average prices per litre for mid-November 1996, and mid-January 1997 were:
