Vol. 475 No. 7

Written Answers. - Ombudsman for Children.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

84 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Health the progress, if any, made in the appointment of an ombudsman to examine the rights of children. [5915/97]

I am fully committed to the principle of the establishment of an ombudsman for children to ensure the responsiveness of services to the needs of children and to promote their rights. The role and function of the ombudsman needs to be explored in detail with other Government Departments, the voluntary sector and all those dealing with children. I am currently developing proposals on the establishment of such a body and I intend to refer these to the Cabinet committee on children as soon as possible.
