Vol. 475 No. 7

Written Answers. - Boyne Valley Development.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

93 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the action, if any, taken, so far, by the steering group on the Boyne Valley; the amount expended; and the expenditure proposal for 1997. [5712/97]

Following the completion of the Boyne Valley integrated development plan in July last year, a management committee was established to oversee the implementation of its recommendations. Progress to date includes: the identification of priority actions for the Boyne way riverside walk; the identification of scenic cycle-routes for development; the recruitment of a manager for the Boyne fisheries; the establishment of the Boyne Valley promotion company; production work on a promotional brochure; the development of a distinctive brand image and logo for the valley and the development of a comprehensive signage strategy.

In addition, studies are nearing completion on the investigation of the feasibility of restoring a section of the Boyne navigation for boating purposes and on the legal title to the navigation. A number of measures for Slane are also being implemented. Meetings have taken place with various interested parties. Ongoing consultation has been invited through advertisements in the local newspapers. Good progress has been maintained on the various national monuments' development projects in the region.

As funding is distributed throughout various programmes and agencies, it is not possible to give precise details of expenditure at this stage.
