Written Answers - Human Rights.

Michael Smith

Question:

32 Mr. M. Smith asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will inform Dáil Éireann of the Government's and the EU's reaction to statements made by Nicholas Burns, US State Department spokesman, which claimed that the United States opposed European efforts to impose new conditions, such as human rights progress, on Turkey's bid for membership of the EU and made by Secretary of State Madeleine Albright which claimed that it is important to send the right signals to Turkey; and if he will give details of the signals, if any, the EU is attempting to send to Turkey by its refusal to take any measures regarding Turkey at the UNHCR in view of the recent denunciation of the Turkish police by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture. [7455/97]

I refer to my reply to Priority Question No. 8 today, which sets out the position of Ireland and our EU partners on relations with Turkey and the human rights situation there.
