Vol. 476 No. 6

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Tony Gregory

Question:

122 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Social Welfare if an old person's centre (details supplied) in Dublin I will be granted a free television license in view of that fact that it caters solely for senior citizens. [7775/97]

The free television licence scheme is intended solely for a person's private residence. This scheme, and the other related schemes such as free electricity or free telephone rental allowance, facilitate elderly or disabled people who are living alone, to continue to live in their own homes for as long as they are able to do so.

The free television licence scheme does not apply to groups of people using a non-residential day-care centre. Any extension of the rules of the scheme to cover all such day-care centres would have cost implications and would have to be considered in a budgetary context.
