Vol. 476 No. 6

Written Answers. - Human Rights in Burma.

Ivor Callely

Question:

45 Mr. Callely asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the progress, if any, which has been made since the Foreign Ministers' meeting in Singapore on 14 February 1997 further to Parliamentary Question No. 48 of 19 February 1997 by Deputy Callely on the deteriorating situation in Burma; if his attention has been drawn to the grave and deteriorating situation on a daily basis; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7829/97]

I have outlined developments in relation to the situation in Burma since the EU-ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Singapore on 13-14 February in reply to a number of parliamentary questions, most recently in reply to Questions Nos. 7, 26, 28, 47 and 48 of 19 March 1997.

I share the Deputy's view of the seriousness of the situation in Burma. I can assure him again that the Government will continue to take up the situation there at every appropriate opportunity.
